Caring for your South African Boerboel

Until the South African Boerboel became a standardized breed Boerboel was Afrikaans for farm dog of unknown origins. Boerboels for the last couple of centuries have been mostly kept on large plantation-like farms in South Africa. These dogs were smart and obedient and accompanied farmers on their daily tasks. Now without a farm, we still employ our Boerboels in canine athletics.

South African Boerboel dogs and puppies can be the ultimate k9 athlete.

All Ohio Boerboel Breeders dogs and pups are trained and prepared to develop their full physical and mental potential. african-boerboelWe train South African Boerboel dogs-puppies beginning with a strong foundation in basic obedience followed up with physical fitness, the using the H.I.I.T and K.I.L. philosophy. H.I.I.T stands for high intensity interval training and K.I.L is an acronym for keep it lean and focused on keeping your dog in the best physical condition possible and does not allow him/her to gain unhealthy excess weight.

Obesity is as much of a problem in mastiff dogs and puppies as it is in humans. Most people are not even aware that their dog might border on obese! Ideally you should be able to see a thin layer of muscle, and not fat, covering your Boerboel's ribs. You should be able to see the ribs! Just past the ribs we like to see the stomach tucked. Do not allow your South African Boerboel to begin bad habits like eating and lying around. You need to have a plan.

THE BIGGEST BOERBOEL is not always healthy.

I cannot tell you how many times a person has called looking for "the biggest puppy in the littter," or worse when they get their new Boerboel puppy home they do crazy stuff attempting to make it grow fast like overfeeding, cooking chiken, making macaroni and cheese, just to name a few of the ridiculous thing I've heard personally lol. But the reality of the situation is that your puppy will get as big as his or her genetics allow and there is not much you can do to change it. Overfeeding is one of the most common mistakes.

Think for a moment: Are you at your very best when you weigh as much as your skeletal frame can possibly support? For example I range between 205 and 225 depending on what I eat and how many calories I am actively burning during the day. Honestly, my frame could support 400 pounds, maybe more. Would that be good for me to be a big as I could possibly be? If I just ate a lay around and packed on the calories without any mental or physical stimulation would that be good for me an individual being bred to perform physically? ABSOLUTELY NOT.

The exact same is true for South African Boerboels. They are bred to perform on a daily basis. And if you don't use it you lose it. Having a South African Boerboel or any working guard dog breed fat and out of shape is unhealthy and will shorten your beloved pet's life span. It is also stressfull if they are not mentally challenged. A boerboel puppy untrained mentally + unworked physically will be a catastrophe for the unprepared owner. That's why we are see so many Boerboels in need of rescue and in shelters.

There are 3 methods of training that we use with our Boerboels, all beginning with a strong foundation in the core 5 obedience commands: come, sit, stay, heel, down. Every dog should know these 5 basic obedience commands.

Weight Training

Ohio Boerboel Breeders dogs and pups are trained to pull weight. Weight training increases our dog's physical power and imposing appearance. Ohio Breeders use a weight pull harness to train our Boerboels pull a wide range of weights. From dumbbells to cars, weight pulling greatly increases our Boerboels' strength, appearance, and health. With weight pulling our South African Boerboels get very strong and it helps to develop large powerful muscles in the chest, neck, torso back and legs.

Endurance Training-

Endurance training means training to go the distance. Our South African Boerboel dogs-puppies do a lot of running and swimming. Endurance training greatly strengthens the cardiovascular systemof our dogs and pups. Our South African Boerboels run with us along side bike cars and ATV's and swim in lakes, ponds, and pools. Endurance training is about building up the dog or pup for the long run. In our endurance training we push our dogs past that extra mile. We like to stregthen flexibility of the muscles by consistently altering our routines. Depending on what we are training for, our dogs and pups will be involved in weight endurance and skill training. The goal behind our endurance training is to greatly increase our dogs ability to perform.

Skill Training-

Skill training is training your Boerboel to do something specific such as hunt or specific capability such as agility. Training for any competition involves skill-specific training. Even weight pull involves more than just hooking my dog to the weight and letting it pull. There are specific routines involved in ever k9 sport that require specific skill sets.

Our young Boerboel pups begin training as soon as they leave their mom. But in young dogs-pups it is important not to overdo it. Keep in mind that a puppy is still developing its musculoskeletal structure and you don't want to cause irreparable damage by overworking. Our young boerboel pups are never involved in activities that we deem too strenuous. It is important to know signs of fatigue and recognize exhaustion in your pup dog to avoid injury or death.
